Bactrocera oleae, the Olive Fruit Fly is a small fly 4-5 mm long with a yellowish-yellow head.
The thorax is yellow-brown, the abdomen is brownish-yellow and its wings are transparent with a characteristic brown spot at the top.
In order for the olive fruit to become susceptible to the attack by the weevil, the kernel must thicken.
To calculate the population, two types of traps are used, the McPhail and the of yellow adhesive that carries a pheromone as an attractant.
Criteria for starting spraying: 7 traps/trap/7 days.
The insect is combated by the application of insecticides approved for olive cultivation by the Ministry of of Agricultural Development based on active substances such as lambda-cyhalothrin, deltamethrin, dimethoate, alpha-cypermethrin etc.
Formulations based on the bacterium Bacillus thurigiensis are also used for biological treatment of scab.
